Get your new Android phone ready for daily life
Start with account access and the information you need to keep. Then choose a manageable set of apps and review the controls that affect interruptions, privacy and recovery. Keep your previous phone nearby until you can reach your important accounts and find the information you expected to transfer.
Three stages · copying time depends on your connection and the amount of information · menu names differ by phone maker and Android version. These instructions focus on phones with Google services; some devices use different account, store and recovery systems.
Start with sign-in and copyingThe three steps
- 01Choose your account and bring across important information
Choose your account and bring across important information: confirm the email address, follow the copying prompts and inspect essential information before retiring your previous phone.
- 02Install a few apps that serve clear everyday purposes
Install a few apps that serve clear everyday purposes: choose from communication, task, reading and creative tools, then inspect each listing and first-run request.
- 03Set boundaries for alerts, access and device recovery
Set boundaries for alerts, access and device recovery: review notifications, battery behavior, permissions, automatic app updates and Google's lost-device controls.
Before you start
- Review what needs preserving. On the previous phone, look for Backup in Settings and read which information is included and when the last backup completed. Separately identify local documents, photos and app-specific content you cannot afford to lose. A device backup should not be treated as a complete inventory of everything stored inside every app.
- Prepare power and connectivity. Charge both phones, have chargers available and use a trusted Wi-Fi connection. Keep a suitable cable nearby if the setup process offers wired copying. Allow time without a firm deadline: the amount of information, connection quality and available transfer options all affect how long the process takes.
- Gather sign-in essentials. Have your Google Account email address, password and second verification method ready, along with access details for essential services. Keep the previous phone available for approval prompts. If the new phone is for a child or is managed by an employer, follow the relevant supervision or organization instructions rather than assuming personal-account setup applies.
Which apps are covered
Step 2 is a menu, not a checklist: open the apps you use and skip the rest. Each app has its own page with where to get it, what to set first and what usually goes wrong.

How this guide is made
This guide is written from Android's and Google's public help pages, with app descriptions limited to the purposes stated in each app's Google Play listing. It separates Google Account synchronization, device copying and app-specific recovery because these processes do not preserve the same information. Menu names differ by phone maker and Android version, so topic-based directions are used where a fixed route would be misleading. App availability, payment terms and supported features should be reviewed in the current listing before installation. These are documentation-based instructions, not a report of testing on phones or inside the apps.
FAQ
Will copying from my previous phone preserve every app and conversation?
No single copying option guarantees that everything will carry over. Read the categories offered during setup, then inspect the result in the apps that matter to you. Some services store information in an account, while others require a separate backup or transfer procedure. Follow the app's own instructions for conversation history and other important content. Keep the source phone unchanged until you have confirmed what is present and resolved any gaps.
What should I do if Google Play or Google services are absent?
The Google Account, Google Play and Google lost-device portions of this guide may not apply to that phone. Consult the phone maker's public setup and support information for its supported account, app store and recovery options. Do not assume that similarly named services work in the same way, and do not use an unfamiliar installation source simply to reproduce the screens described here.
Can I pause setup and finish another day?
Most app installation and everyday settings can be revisited later. Copying or restoring information can be more time-sensitive because some choices are presented during initial setup and later options vary by device. Read the available prompts before skipping them, and keep your previous phone and backup accessible. At minimum, establish a screen lock and reliable account access before relying on the phone; leave optional apps and visual preferences for a quieter moment.
