Start NowWhat changed this week
These are the three changes in Speak and Translate Languages 8.1.8 that stand out in the developer's update notes and on its Google Play listing this week.
- 01Fixes and stability work
The notes cover general fixes and stability. For someone using the translator, that means this build is focused on keeping the app’s core experience dependable.
- 02Worth using: translate spoken words
The voice translator is built for spoken words and phrases between languages. It can be useful when you need to communicate aloud while travelling, studying, or talking with someone.
- 03Worth using: translate text in photos
The photo translator is intended to help interpret foreign-language text from a picture. The app also offers text-to-speech and sharing for translated text and audio.
Our call on whether to update, and the link to the official Google Play listing, are on this issue's Speak and Translate Languages page.

Tips
- Try a spoken phrase first
Choose a short phrase and use the voice translator to work between the languages you need. Speaking a simple greeting or question is a practical way to get familiar with the app’s conversation-focused feature. Check that the selected languages match the people speaking before using the translation in a longer exchange.
- Use photos for printed text
When you come across text in another language, use the photo translation feature to work from a picture. Make the words easy to see in the image, then review the translated result before relying on it. This can be useful for signs, menus, or other printed material while travelling or studying.
- Listen to and share translations
Use text-to-speech when hearing a translated phrase would be more useful than reading it. The app also describes sharing translated text and audio, which can help you pass a result to another person. Look in the app for its sharing controls, and check the translation before you send it.
Menu names follow the developer's help pages and can differ slightly between versions and phones.
How we write the digest
Each week we check the Google Play listings of the apps our readers use most: the version number, the update date and the developer's What's new notes. When an app has a new version, we put the developer's update notes and the listing details together on one page, in plain words, with a link to the official Google Play listing. Google and most developers release updates in stages over several days, so a version listed here may not have reached your phone yet. GoCompareNow is an independent site and is not affiliated with any developer. This page doesn't read your phone or your Google account, and nothing is installed from here.
FAQ
Is this the official list of Speak and Translate Languages changes?
No. This is an independent site and is not affiliated with Battery Stats Saver. The app’s Google Play page is the authority for its listing and current release information. For the latest details about the build, check that page and compare it with the version offered through Google Play.
Why does Google Play show Open instead of Update?
Google Play may show Open when the latest build is already available to your account, or when an update is being offered gradually through a staged rollout. Check again later if you are expecting a newer build. You can also open the app’s Play page directly to see which action Google Play currently offers.
Can I translate a sign with the app?
The app describes a photo translation feature for foreign-language text: take a picture of the text and use the translator to work with it. A clear image can make the words easier to handle. Check the language options available in the app, and review the result before using it for an important decision.
